Alemanes Footbridge (the Germans’ Footbridge)

The name of the Alemanes Footbridge (the Germans’ Footbridge) comes from a historical event which took place at the beginning of the XX century. A group of Germans from Cameroon came to take refuge in Pamplona in 1915-16. Many stayed on in the city for good. Some of them used to go down to swim in the River Arga, even in the winter, and went so far as to break the ice on the surface in order to bathe. Such was their love of swimming that Karelius Arutzen obtained a municipal licence to build a bathing hut in the district of La Magdalena. The footbridge crosses the River Arga to make pedestrian traffic easier. Special care was taken in its design to ensure that the construction blended in with the landscape and served “as a doorway between the urban and rural worlds”.
